- These are some suggested brushes: Dynasty Black Gold - (Series 206A) #1/4", #3/8" Angles, (Series 206R) #2 Round, (Series 206FW) 3/4" Flat Wash, Stencil - 1/2" (You can get all of these brushes and more from THE BRUSH GUYS Use promo code sandymc for an additional discount.
- Identi-Pen - Black
- Ruler & Pencil
- Wired Ribbon - Available at your local craft store
- Using the 3/4" Flat Wash, paint the surface with DecoArt All-Purpose Sealer. Let dry.
- Using a wet 3/4" Flat Wash, paint the surface with white Gesso. Paint long strokes from side to side. Let dry.
- Measuring from the center at the top of the ornament - mark at 1 1/8", 2 3/8", and 3 1/2". Draw a line across the ornament for each of these and then go back over the pencil line with the Identi-Pen.
- Load the stencil brush with Raw Umber and wipe a lot of the paint off on a paper towel. Going from side to side, dry brush the Raw Umber onto the ornament to give it the appearance of wood. Repeat as often as necessary. If you get it too dark, simply wipe it with a paper towel or paint a wash of inky Gesso over it. Let dry completely before transferring on the pattern.
- Transfer pattern on using transfer paper and a pen or stylus.
- Load #2 Round with Raw Umber and paint wreath. Rinse brush.
- Load #2 Round with Quinacridone Gold and Titanium White; mix on palette. Add highlights on the wreath here and there.
- Load 1/4" Angle with Sap Green and Paynes Grey (no need to mix - just add both colors to the brush) then paint evergreen sprigs. Start with the sprig at the top and work back toward the widest part. The toe follows as you pull the chisel edge of the brush to paint the stroke using little to no pressure. Start by painting a stem down the center and bring the strokes from the left, right, and on top of the main stem.
- Load 1/4" Angle with Sap Green and then add Green Gold to the toe of the brush only. Add some Titanium White to the toe and blend in the same place on your palette - keeping the toe with just the Green Gold and Titanium White on it.
- Start at the single sprig at the top and slide on the chisel edge with little to no pressure to paint the stroke. NOTE: The heel leads and the toe follows - leaving the lighter highlight on the evergreen sprig. Repeat strokes all the way down the evergreen sprigs - reloading as necessary.
- Dip the end of the 3/8" Angle brush handle into Pyrrole Red and dot berries. Let dry.
- Load the 1/4" Angle brush with Pyrrole Red and then the toe only with Hansa Yellow Light and Titanium White. Blend in the same place on the palette - keeping the toe in the same place.
- Float a highlight on the berries.
- Rinse brush, load with Pyrrole Red and on the toe only add some Paynes Grey. Float toe along the bottom of the berries. Let dry.
- Load #2 Round with Titanium White and highlight the berries. Once you add the highlight, lightly touch it with your finger to soften the look.
- Load the toe of a damp 3/8" Angle brush with Paynes Grey and shade underneath the berries and branches as shown. If the shading it too dark, simply lay a paper towel on top and lightly press - this will lift some of the color. Add some shading where the evergreen sprigs come together and meet the wreath as well.
- Load the #2 Round brush with Titanium White and paint the words.
- Load the #2 Round with Paynes Grey and paint a shadow on the letters as shown.
- Once everything has completely dried, varnish the ornament.
- Add wired ribbon to the ornament and hang on the tree, add it to a present or to your holiday table setting.
